Home Cooked Prawn and Red Pepper Tikka Masala Recipe

‘Tikka’ implies a morsel or a bite. Masala is but the Indian spice mix. However, to taste one of the best savories, you need to use large portions delivered by prawn export India.

Although prawn is not as popular as chicken. Indian restaurants primarily serve paneer or chicken tikka masala. Very few are there who decide to present that extra Prawn Tikka Masala before their customers. You can prepare the same at your home restaurant style.

  • 1 large size roughly chopped onion
  • 1 thumb-sized peeled and grated ginger
  • 2 large garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp rapeseed oil
  • 2-3 tsp tikka curry paste
  • 400g can chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • ½ tbsp light brown soft sugar
  • 3 bashed cardamom pods
  • 200g brown basmati rice
  • 3 tsp ground almonds
  • 300g raw king prawns
  • 1 tbsp double cream
  • ½ bunch of roughly chopped coriander
  • naan bread warmed to serve


Before you begin, make sure to devein and shell shrimps bought from the seafood exporters. The tail can be left on. You can pat it dry and toss it with other ingredients of the marinade except for the oil. You can stir it for 15 – 30 minutes.


First, make a smooth paste of ginger, onion, and garlic. You may heat the oil in a large pan or flameproof casserole dish over medium heat. You may add the onion paste and fry it for 8 mins until it turns lightly golden. You may stir in the curry paste and fry for another 1 min. Add sugar, tomatoes, cardamom pods, and tomato purée. Bring it to a simmer and cook for another 10 mins covering with the lid.


Now, you need to scoop the cardamom out of the curry sauce and discard it. Blitz it in a food processor or with a hand blender. Next, add the shrimp and almonds and cook for another 5 mins. For seasoning, you can stir through the cream and coriander. You may serve with rice or naan bread.
